Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
